During the first quarter of 2026, Washington Care Center was ranked second in size among Washington County nursing homes, sharing this position with three others, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported. Its tie was with River Heights Healthcare Center, Arbor Walk Healthcare Center, and Legacy Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation.

The nursing home provided 60 beds—six below the county average reported for Q1 2026—and served an average of 54.4 residents each day throughout that timeframe.

CMS awarded Washington Care Center a 4 out of 5 overall rating, surpassing the mean rating of 2.7 assigned to Mississippi’s nursing facilities.

MS Care Center of Greenville emerged as the largest nursing home in Washington County during the period, offering 90 beds.

By the end of Q1 2026, Washington Care Center had faced a total penalty of $4,017 in a single fine and incurred one penalty altogether.

The county counted four for-profit nursing homes in total.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the country’s older adult population is expanding while numbers in younger groups decrease. The population 65 and up grew 13% from 2020 to 2024, while those under 18 dropped 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population has skyrocketed over the last 100 years, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicates that nearly half of Americans in this age bracket—about 28 million people—will need some form of long-term services and supports. Further, more than a third are projected to need care in a nursing home at some point.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
