2019-2020: What were the backgrounds of Sharkey County students?

Of the 759 students enrolled in Sharkey County schools in 2019-2020, 96.7% were Black or African American, according to the Mississippi Department of Education. This was the most represented ethnicity among Sharkey County students.

This is a 0.3% decrease from the previous school year.

South Delta Elementary School had the highest enrollment of Black or African American students in the 2019-2020 school year.

A snapshot of Sharkey County schools showed 96.7% students were Black or African American.

There are three schools in Sharkey County.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly one decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
