Battalions One and Two and Mound Bayou VFD saved a neighborhood from destruction by fire this afternoon.
A grass fire started along a turn-row/ditch and near US Highway 61 raced north, driven by 20+ mph wind, into tall brush.
Recent dry conditions and the wind resulted in 15-20' flame lengths.
Firefighters caught up with it just as it closed in on the Head Start building and homes along Trotter St. Engines 151, 154, 251, 951, and Tanker 161 used Trotter St as a fire break and largely kept the fire at bay while Squad 1 and firefighters on the ground attacked the fire in the field.
Flaming embers did allow fire to escape the containment line and burn to within 10' of two homes - but crews quickly pounced on these spot fires.
By the time all was done, 250 acres had burned but no homes were lost and nobody was injured.
Please, do not light outdoor fires and take care to properly dispose of smoking materials.
