Oak Grove Retirement Home was identified as the second largest nursing home in Bolivar County during the first quarter of 2026, matched with another facility, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The center shared this rank with Diversicare of Shelby.

Records indicate Oak Grove Retirement Home had 60 beds, surpassing the county average by two beds in the first quarter of 2026. The facility averaged 55.3 residents during this period.

CMS gave Oak Grove Retirement Home an overall rating of 3 out of 5, above the state average of 2.7 for Mississippi’s nursing homes.

Delta Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center was reported as the largest facility in Bolivar County with 75 beds during the quarter.

As of the first quarter of 2026, Oak Grove Retirement Home incurred two fines totaling $16,195 and received two penalties.

Bolivar County, Mississippi, had a total of four for-profit nursing home establishments during the period.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the growth of the nation’s older adult population while the younger population declines. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and older saw a 13% increase, while the number under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The older adult population in the country expanded substantially since 1920, rising from 4.9 million to more than 61 million in 2024.

Findings from a 2021 study indicate that almost half of this older demographic—about 28 million people—will require long-term services and support, and over a third are expected to eventually seek care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
