U.S. Census Bureau estimates show a continued increase in the nation’s older population while younger age groups dwindle. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of Americans age 65 and older climbed by 13%, as the under-18 population declined by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population has expanded significantly in the past 100 years, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A study conducted in 2021 found that nearly half of Americans ages 65 and older, or roughly 28 million people, may eventually need long-term care and related services. The findings also indicate more than a third may require nursing home support at some stage.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
